Gear Check

Gear check will be available at the starting line. Participants may drop their gear at Gear Check. Gear will then be transported to the finish line for pickup. Runners will need their race bib as identification to retrieve their checked gear. Please use any bag that is of standard backpack or duffle bag size. Please attach your gear check tag (from your race bib) prior to checking your bag (zip ties will be provided). Please note, with the volume of gear checked for an event like this and our finish line setup, we are unable to provide covered gear check. Please plan accordingly in case of inclement weather. If wet weather is forecast, we recommend using a waterproof bag for your gear check.

Start Waves

The Ready to Run 20 Miler uses start waves to organize runners at the start based on expected pace per mile. Wave 1 will begin at 6:30 a.m. and each subsequent wave will depart approximately 30 seconds after the last runners from the previous wave have crossed the start line. The last wave is expected to begin at approximately 6:42 a.m. Wave 1 - 7:30 pace p/Mi. and Faster Wave 2 - 8:00 pace p/Mi. Wave 3 - 8:30 pace p/Mi. Wave 4 - 9:00 pace p/Mi. Wave 5 - 9:30 pace p/Mi. Wave 6 - 10:00 pace p/Mi. Wave 7 - 10:30 pace p/Mi. Wave 8 - 11:00 pace p/Mi. Wave 9 - 11:30 pace p/Mi. Wave 10 - 12:00 pace p/Mi. Wave 11 - 12:30 pace p/Mi. Runners will self select their start wave on the morning of the run. Runners are NOT assigned a specific wave or pace group, and do not need to select a wave during registration. Pacers will be available for at minimum the following paces (7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, and Run/Walk Paces 12:00, 12:30, 13:00). Paces for additional paces may be available. Pacers will be carrying signs with their pace at the start only. Pacers will have special back bibs indicating their pace to identify them during the run. Please find your appropriate wave in the staging area. CARA training program runners are encouraged to organize with their training program group leaders. Non-CARA training program runners are encouraged to line up anywhere within their chosen wave. Remember, this is not a race, this is an organized training run to help prepare participants for their race day effort. Pacers are there to help you maintain a steady pace for the length of the run. Pace groups will run through aid stations "race style" to help prepare participants for their marathon race day. Pace groups will not stop and wait for runners who need to use toilets during the run.

Post-Run Transportation

Buses will transport runners between the finish line (Jackson Park) and the starting line (Montrose Beach-Wilson Parking Lot) after their run. Start line route buses will go directly to the start line with no stops on the way. A limited number of additional buses will provide a route directly to a downtown stop in the Grant Park area. Buses from the finish to the start will depart approximately every 15 minutes beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Buses from the finish to downtown will depart approximately every 30 minutes beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Runner transport buses are for participants only. Friends and family will not be permitted to ride buses.

EVENT UPDATE

For 2020, the traditional CARA Ready to Run 20 Miler will not occur. In 2020, the CARA Ready to Run 20 Miler will occur at each CARA training site due to mass gathering restrictions in Illinois, not lifted until Phase 5 of the state's reopening plan. Since we are unable to predict when this will occur, we have adapted our plans for this season as follows:

  • At each training site, pace groups will complete their 20 miler with appropriate support provided for medical, hydration, and fuel.
  • Participants will receive a Ready to Run 20 Miler finishers shirt, and goody bag. These items will either be provided at a running store within a 10 mile radius of the training site, or provided at the training site (TBA).
Due to these changes, there will not be an opportunity for runners not part of the CARA Training Program to participate. Further details will be provided to CARA Training Program runners through program newsletters.
